On this blog you'll find articles that deal with my experience in Southern Gospel Music, Bible studies that I've conducted, my family, items in the news, and maybe even a comment or two about college football that I love so dearly. I'll make a better effort in the future, how's that?

The kids are out of school. They both did very well this year. Sam and Jack each had "A" averages in all subjects. Sam received several awards for his participation in the Neshoba Central Middle School 7th grade band. Say it ain't so!

I’m usually not shocked by the things I hear in the news these days, but I must admit something in the news caused me to shake my head in disbelief a couple of weeks ago. It seems that the long-running children’s show “Sesame Street” has decided to rename the lovable, hairy, chocolate-chip devourer known by so many as Cookie Monster. What reasoning are they using when they attempt to rename an American icon like “Cookie?” For me, the Cookie Monster was the reason I sat through mind-numbing lessons of how to count to 10 in Spanish. Knowing that He might appear at any time kept me watching intently as they discussed the boring letter of the day. The fact that the blue fur and jiggling eyes might engulf a large platter of oatmeal delights at any moment made me sit patiently while I had to listen to Bert and Ernie whine about something silly. It wasn’t just the fact that he would eat cookies, but it was how he ate them. You remember. All of them stuffed into his mouth at once with crumbs flying is a picture burned into my young mind forever. Of course his battle cry, the deep-throated roar of COOKIES, stays with me also.

The Cookie Monster’s way of eating cookies was something my brother and I loved to try to duplicate. Wasn’t that what Sesame Street was all about, getting children to mimic the lessons learned there? We both developed into almost carbon-copies of our puppet-hero. We even were able to complete our performance with his routine of holding the cookie platter high above his head and letting the last few morsels fall directly into his open gullet. (We didn’t perfect this part immediately as evidenced by a few broken dishes for which our Mother was not amused.) Cookie Monster didn’t cause us to want to eat cookies, he just influenced the way we ate them.

This brings me back to the renaming of my furry hero. The higher-ups at Sesame Street think that children are eating too many cookies and unhealthy snacks because of the influence of Cookie Monster. They seem convinced that Cookie Monster is the number one cause of child obesity in America. They are so convinced that they have decided to disassociate the monster from “cookies.” All of this is done in the hopes that our children will become leaner and healthier. I must respectfully disagree with the master-minds behind this evil attempt at political correctness at the expense of my beloved Cookie Monster. Kids eat lots of cookies for two reasons. First, they taste great. I mean, it’s really hard to make a bad tasting cookie when you start with ingredients like chocolate chips, peanut butter, sugar and so forth. Second, adults allow children to eat as many as they want to. Changing either one of these two things would change how children eat cookies and allow us to keep the time honored tradition of Cookie Monster. The task is really simple. Find an adult that will say no to a child or find a way to make cookies taste like stewed tomatoes. Come to think of it, maybe neither of those is that simple.

Though I continue to disagree with the decision to rename Cookie, I do feel that it’s my duty as a fan to try to influence what his new name might be. In my next journal I’ll try to list some alternative names Cookie might use and why they might or might not be good choices. Please feel free to e-mail me with any suggestions you have on this subject.
